A Glimpse into the Heart of Support Work

Fiorella Simonte

Behind every act of care lies a story of compassion, dedication, and human connection. Support workers play a vital role in the lives of people with disability, offering not only assistance but also encouragement, dignity, and respect. Today, we’re shining a light on one of our incredible support workers—Fiorella—and her journey.

What inspired you to become a support worker?

“I’ve always loved working with people. Being in a role that allows me to connect, care, and make a difference felt natural to me. Support work isn’t just a job—it’s a vocation, and one that brings deep satisfaction.”

What do you love most about your role?

“Being part of people’s lives is what I cherish the most. There’s something special about knowing that participants are waiting for you and welcoming you into their day. I also learn so much from them, which makes the role even more meaningful.”

Can you share a meaningful moment you’ve experienced with a participant?

“It’s the small victories that make me proud. For example, noticing positive changes in daily activities—like self-care—reminds me that the work we do has a real and lasting impact. Those little steps forward are the most important milestones.”

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about support work?

“Support work is about so much more than just accompanying someone for a few hours. It’s about truly caring for their wellbeing, encouraging positive habits, and being observant enough to notice changes that could affect their quality of life. Above all, it means being supportive and respectful of their choices.”

How do you unwind or recharge after a big week?

“For me, physical activity is key. Moving my body helps me recharge and gives me the energy I need to show up for others.”

Fiorella’s story reminds us that support work is more than a profession—it’s a calling rooted in empathy, patience, and humanity. Her experiences highlight the impact support workers have each day and why their role is so invaluable.
